The Truth about Losing Your Job to Outsourcing

The old adage, "It's not what you know, it's who know" is becoming more and more accurate as the global market becomes a much smaller place. In the past, recent graduates would learn to move up the corporate ladder by partaking in remedial tasks while acquiring the necessary training from their superiors through immersion.

Around 1998, the demand for "knowledge worker" jobs such as customer service, technical support, accounting, human resources, and programming where outsourced to countries with lower-wages. In the past few years, extremely high-tech, skill positions have begun to be outsourced to countries such as India, China and Taiwan. Positions that once brought millions to the titans of the SIlicon Valley are now being sprinkled across the Pacific for fractions of the labor costs.

Unless legislation curbs this pattern of out-sourcing, English speaking countries with lower labor costs will remove high-paying jobs out of Western countries.

Since it does not appear that the government will intervene with the open market, there are two main questions you should ask yourself when planning your career.

1) Does your career require your physical presence?

2) Does your career require a strong skill-set of creativity?

You want to pick a career that requires your attendance and cannot be performed remotely - use your legal work status and residency to your advantage. Learn a trade of skill that requires your two-hands or attendance such as a nurse, police officer, or physician.

Combining creativity with proximity in your career-search gives you added security and improves your chances of building and expanding upon a stable career. Look for a career that requires a level of skill or creativity such as marketing, teaching, business managing, writing or desiging.

We are not suggesting that all technology related jobs will be offshored this year. Cultural differences, training and distance inevitably add time and complexity to any offshore campaign administered by a company.

Career-seekers should look for jobs that need to be done very quickly and consistently, are complex in structure and require interpersonal, face to face interaction.
