Six Career Opportunities Likely to Benefit from the Stimulus Plan

The 2009 stimulus package is upon us. Although it will take a while before we feel its effects, six career opportunities are likely to benefit from Obama’s stimulus plan.

  1. Construction – This sector represents a huge bulk of the stimulus package, since it accomplishes two major objectives: it creates jobs while improving the country’s infrastructure. Job openings for traditional hard-hat construction jobs, equipment manufacturers and suppliers are generally expected to get a boost. Career openings for waste disposal engineers, transit coordinators and even accountants and managers for large-scale construction projects are also likely to benefit from the plan. An estimated 1.85 million jobs will be created or saved by the Obama administration’s stimulus package.
  2. Energy and Utilities – President Obama promised that his administration will modernize the country’s electrical grid. Many individuals will be expected to come in as load management engineers, regulators, systems control center operators and meter manufacturers.
  3. Green Sector – A major part of the president’s objective is to lead the country towards foreign oil independence. Expansion of “green jobs” is, therefore, also one of the prime priorities of the stimulus package. Job openings likely to get a boost include those in solar panel manufacturing, installment, architecture and energy rating auditing to name a few.
  4. Medical Information Technology – President Obama also talked about improving health care during his campaign. Aside from making health care more affordable for people, Obama is also focused on improving health care systems nationwide by utilizing health information technology. People skilled in health systems, systems administration, systems analysis, project management, software and hardware design, and computer assembly are expected to benefit from this part of the stimulus plan.
  5. Education – The stimulus package is also sinking in huge funding for education to help stabilize states and prevent them from further cutting education budgets and laying-off personnel. Additional funding could also lead to more teaching jobs and administrative positions especially in early childhood development programs such as the statewide Head Start and Early Head Start programs.
  6. Federal Government – In order to avoid another “banking episode” where billions of dollars went to CEO bonuses and other benefits, the federal government will receive funding to make sure that the money from the stimulus package will go to where it’s intended. Increased demand for lawyers, accountants, regulators and administrators can be expected.
