Research is King in Your Job Search
Today’s financial crisis has caused an all-time low for employment rates as many companies are forced to downsize. Job hunters face the challenge of looking for work against ever-growing competition. Are there still jobs out there?
The presence and popularity of online job sites like Ladder, Monster and CareerBuilder are proof that there are companies out there that are still hiring. Trying economic times make job openings seem as scarce as water in the desert. However, there are still plenty of job opportunities when you consider the fact that the generation of baby-boomers are reaching retirement age. You just need to be able to come up with an effective job search strategy to find these hiring companies.
In order to be successful with your job search, you must do your research. So what should you be looking for?
1) Follow recession-proof industries.
Some industries are more resilient to economic downturns. Industries like education, health care, security and energy supply services function regardless of what happens to the economy. During economic hardships, companies in these industries are likely to continue hiring new employees.
2) Assess the range of your skills.
You don’t have to be a teacher to get a career in education, or a nurse to get a career in health care. Sometimes, the very skills you have are in demand in recession-proof industries. For instance, hospitals are also in need of administrators and information assistants while the security sector is also in need of programmers.
Assess the range of your skills to find out whether you can transfer to a safer industry without having to change your specialties.
3) Expand your skills
It’s possible that your occupational skills are so specific that transferring to another industry becomes more challenging. In order to increase your opportunities, you may have to go back to school. But don’t worry. You may still opt to take a degree online so can benefit from flexible schedules. This makes it easier for you to accomplish your daily obligations while expanding your skills. In addition, most student aid programs are still applicable for online learning.
