Are you someone who wants to lead a life of action and adventure? Are you one of those who are fond of watching crime or legal drama shows such as CSI, The Practice, or NYPD Blue? Or even someone who aspires to be in a legal profession? If your answer to these questions is YES, then this job is for you: be a PARALEGAL.

What is a paralegal?

A less known profession in the legal industry, a paralegal is a person who literally assists lawyers in handling cases. It is more like being a legal assistant, but a paralegal has a wider scope of duties. We all know that law practitioners have a lot of responsibilities to work on, from studying the case they handle to defending it in court. To lessen the lawyer’s workload, paralegals are there to gather, filter and organize the information needed on a certain case. Paralegals are also in charge of talking to the client while the lawyer is not yet around. It is the paralegal who introduces the law and translates it in layman’s terms. Paralegals also act as researchers and they gather facts, documents and other valuable information for the lawyer to study. Their only limitation is that they could not go into legal practice.

Career opportunities for paralegals

Being a paralegal can be more exciting than a lawyer, for he is the one sent to where the action is. Pursuing a paralegal job is a promising career, since the line of work is a necessity in every legal office around.

Paralegals are also needed in other criminal justice offices such as the Police Department. They can act as crime scene investigators, or as interns in the District Attorney’s Office.

Moreover, being a paralegal is a good path towards a successful legal career. Paralegal work may serve as a training experience for one who aspires to become a lawyer. Paralegal education consists of trainings, and is also part of legal justice and criminal justice courses. Online degrees are available as well, as they contain more in depth modules and training materials which are very helpful in pursuing a paralegal career.
