Online Degrees Attractive to Employers

Online degree programs have been gaining much popularity in recent years. For one, overall cost is cheaper for online degree programs. In addition, online degrees offered by online universities are convenient because of flexible schedules that allow students to study anywhere, anytime and at their own pace.

These benefits entice more and more adult workers to pursue advanced degrees. After all, they can continue with their work and other obligations while they study at the pace that’s convenient for them. The sacrifice isn’t much and the reward is just too much to ignore. For instance, people with advanced degrees, on the average, earn around $85,000 annually, compared to individuals with a bachelor’s degree who earn an average of $46,000 annually. Put it simply, online degree programs make it much easier to earn and benefit from advanced degrees.

But there are some people who still question the quality of online degree programs. Some believe that live interaction with the professor and other students is still very much part of the learning process. Going physically to a classroom makes it easier for students to address questions and concerns.

It’s true that emailing (the common form of communication for online degree programs) has its limits. It takes longer to respond to and address concerns. Because of this limitation, students taking online degrees must develop their attention to detail. They must understand instructions more carefully in order to avoid wasting time emailing irrelevant questions. The lack of interaction with the professor means that a student must also be able to read more thoroughly, because the bulk of learning comes from reading.

Therefore, online degree programs require self-motivation and lots of discipline in order to accomplish the requirements. These traits are the reason why employers find people with online degrees attractive from a company perspective. They want to hire professionals who take the initiative and are open to learning new things.
