New Jobs in the Obama Administration
The global financial crisis hasn’t been short on news about companies downsizing – tallying a growing number of lay-offs. The unemployment rate in the country has skyrocketed and many people are worried about where to find work.
According to experts, there are industries that weather economic downturns better than others do. Among the more resilient industries would be jobs in government. And with the advent of the new administration, more people are beginning to explore government openings or “obama jobs,” as they type it in Google.
As you seek any potential opportunity, you must keep in mind that, like any other job application, strategy is always important if you want to secure one of the jobs in government. Your strategy depends on where you are in your career – whether you have experience or if you are a fresh graduate.
Fresh graduates, having little-to-no working experience and limited contacts, can opt to go to Washington, D.C., and apply for volunteer work. It’s not a full-time career, but it’s the best way to get experience. It takes time and patience, but with enough jobs under your belt, you can land a paying position.
For people who already have work experience, utilizing your network is your best option. Of course, having experience in volunteer government programs adds value to your resume’. However, if you truly want to have the best chances of landing a position, work your contacts (and the contacts of your contacts). Try to get in touch with the local presidential campaign organizers and the transition team. You’d want to link your skills and experience to the desired position you want.
