Military Career Branches

Careers in the military are divided into six branches, each with specific objectives to protect the country’s liberty. Listed below are the different military career branches:

  1. The U.S. Army – This branch is concerned with the protection of the country’s security and its resources. Members of the U.S. army must be prepared to protect national interests as well as the interests of U.S. allies in land-based operations throughout the world. U.S. Army careers include administration, operations, and maintenance of the army’s weapons, vehicles and electronic systems.
  2. U.S. Navy – This branch protects the right of the country to travel and trade by sea. It also protects the country’s overseas interests during times of conflict and unrest. U.S. Navy careers cover jobs in ships, submarines and sea-based aircraft. Currently, Navy personnel maintain and operate more than 320 ships and 4,000 aircraft.
  3. U.S. Air Force – It is the responsibility of this branch to defend the interest of the country and its allies through air and space operations. Air Force careers involve the use and maintenance of various aircraft such as long-range bombers, supersonic fighter jets, and AWACS (Airborne Warning and Control Systems). Currently, the U.S. Air Force recruits an estimated 30,000 to 40,000 men and women annually.
  4. U.S. Marine Corps – As one of the most elite military forces in the world, the U.S. Marine Corps boasts of officers and enlisted personnel who fly aircraft, man radar equipment and gather intelligence. The Marine Corps offers rigid training programs aimed at developing exceptional mental resolve and physical abilities.
  5. U.S. Coast GuardMilitary careers in this branch aim to protect the country’s coastlines and inland waterways. The U.S. Coast Guard enforces fishing laws and boat safety, maintains lighthouses, conducts search and rescue operations, and battles drug smuggling.
  6. Army National Guard – Members of this branch are the reserves of the U.S. army. They must be prepared for active duty at any moment. In addition, the Army National Guard can go on missions in each state as determined by the U.S. Congress.
