Maximizing Your Employability During the Recession

Today’s economic crisis has created a very dense job-seeking market. Whether you’re a fresh graduate or a victim of a forced lay-off, finding work is a challenge. In order to secure a job, you must be able to maximize your employability skills. Here are some tips for employment:

1) Translate your educational attainment in practical terms – Having a degree is good because it guarantees that you are knowledgeable about a particular field of study. However, it doesn’t give a clear picture of all your employability skills. Not all the skills you have are subject- or course-related. You may have other general skills, personal skills and interests that can add up to your employability skills. You have to be specific about what you can do. Are you good in computers? Do you have exceptional math abilities? Write it down.

2) Emphasize your work experience – Employers look for people who are well rounded. They like people who have commendable individual achievements, but who can also work in a team. Employers want applicants who display leadership qualities as well. All these qualities can be proven by citing specific situations in your work experience. Fresh graduates can mention volunteer work, internships, extra-curricular activities or other additional training programs. Your work experience can show that you are able to apply what you’ve learned.

3) Be open to learning new things – Employers want to hire people who are willing to learn and improve themselves. Ask yourself what other skills you’d like to learn as you pursue the career of your choice. If you have plans of studying further, such as taking up an online degree program, be sure to mention these plans either in your resume or during your interview.
