Maximize Your Job Hunting Efficiency

The IMPACT Group, a WBE-leader in career transition solutions, recently revealed the findings of their latest study on how their clients discovered and landed new work opportunities. Based on 419 subjects, the study analyzed the effects of certain factors such as age, gender and salary in relation to job searching techniques. Here are some of the findings:

- Know when to utilize networking

Career opportunities that offer annual salaries of more than $100K are rarely publicly advertised. Therefore, if you’re for a higher position, it’s best to search through your personal network. This approach is also known as the ‘hidden job market’. The study showed that 46% were able to get high level jobs in this manner (38% for jobs from $60K-$100K).

Networking is the most effective approach for job seekers over the age of 40. Recruiters, on the other hand, are still the most reliable source for job information for people over the age of 50.

Published openings were most useful for jobs that offer $60K or less.

- Don’t overlook the Internet

The study showed that the Internet accounted for a 41% chance of finding a potential job. The breakdown of the effectiveness of the Internet is as follows: online marketing – 10%, published openings - 28%, and email/online networking – 3%.

- Mix Strategies for better results

Direct application to companies is the preferred approach for many employers. However, it would also be beneficial to expand your network of contacts within your target organization. In that way, you may also have referrals from within the company that increases your likelihood of landing the job you want.
