Jobs Hiring Amidst the Recession

With 533,000 jobs reportedly lost last November according to the Department of Labor Statistics, the layoff total for the year 2008 has spiked to 1.9 million. With so many people frantically scrambling for work, it’s very easy to wonder if there are job openings during this economic downturn. The good news is that there are still jobs hiring now. Despite the receding economy, there are industries that thrive. Here are the industries with abundant job openings:

1) Health Care - The American population is getting older and the demand for health services is on the rise. This remains to be the country’s healthiest sector, with 34,000 jobs created in November alone. Over the past 12 months, 369,000 jobs were added.

2) Education – Many people who lost their jobs are seriously considering taking up further studies in order to have the credentials to make a career switch. Therefore, careers in education must also expand to accommodate increasing demand. There were 9,800 careers added in the education industry last November, according to the labor department.

3) Accounting – With tax season looming, demand for careers in finance and accounting are also on the rise. And, ironically, the recession is causing the spike in demand for more accountants, with so many firms under scrutiny and tightening regulations. These companies are very much in need of financial controls that require accountants to cut costs and control spending.
