Going Green: Great Career Opportunities in the Environmental Sector

According to a United Nations report, the environmental industry created 3.5 million jobs in 2005 alone. It’s seen as one of the fastest growing and stable industries now – and with good reason. With natural disasters brought about by the likes of Katrina and Gustav, more people are becoming conscientious about environmental issues. Gone are the days when many people thought that global warming was just a myth.

Many industries and businesses are pressured to comply with ever-increasing standards of sustainable development. Industry giants like Google and GM already have office positions like Chief Sustainability Officer and Chief Environmental Officer. In fact, even the Honda Racing Formula 1 Team has already collaborated with Earthdreams, a global initiative that supports environmental projects concerned with technology, mobility, sustainability and education.

This new trend of "going green" has caused a new opening for "green jobs", making the environmental industry a thriving sector. Anyone in the middle of a job search may want to check out the growing number of "green jobs," many of which have salaries that could as high as six digits.

But don’t think that a career search in the environmental sector is limited to highly specialized fields. For instance, graduates of law school can take advantage of the opportunities in environmental law. Another example would be the field of industrial design, where, design, manufacturing and packaging must comply with environmental standards.

Green jobs are abundant and varied. It would be wise for jobseekers to consider the many opportunities in the environmental sector.
