According to the LA Times, Los Angeles school officials have been tapping the teacher workforce in other countries just to fill out much needed elementary teacher slots. Although the recent budget crisis has halted the hiring of foreign exchange teachers for the time being, this report reflects just how much teacher shortage is actually affecting the United States.

The truth is that there is high demand for teachers – especially elementary teachers. And with a significant number of elementary school teachers reaching retirement age, the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) expects that the demand is likely to grow. Thus, amidst the economic recession where jobs are scarce, teaching elementary students serves as a good opportunity for employment.

Requirements for Teaching Elementary

Ideally, you’d want to earn a teaching license approved by the State Board of Education. Although it’s true that some private institutions don’t require it, having a state-approved license gives you the best opportunities for employment.

To get a license, you are required to have a bachelor’s degree – having either majored or minored in education. A growing number of states also require having a Master’s degree in education.

You will also need to complete an approved teaching program that satisfies the required number of subject and education credits. In addition, you may also be tasked to undergo a supervised teaching internship.
