Do Not Forget About Your Transferable Skills

Many people assume that your college degree determines all your career skills, that jobs you can apply for are limited to those related to your major. But aside from technical or highly specialized fields, this isn’t always the case. How is this possible? Employers also look at your transferable skills.

Transferable skills are work skills that are required in most jobs. So while your college degree is important in defining your specialized knowledge and skills, it doesn’t mean that you can only qualify for jobs directly related to your major.

By keeping in mind your transferable skills, you can open up many career opportunities. The more career opportunities you explore, the more chances you have in gaining employment.
Employers look for five general transferable skills:

  1. Critical Thinking – This refers to your capacity to analyze situations and to comprehend information. This skill is also the foundation of your problem-solving abilities.
  2. Communication – This refers to your ability to get your point across effectively whether oral or written.
  3. Teamwork – This refers to how well you can work with other people.
  4. Foresight – This refers to your insight in determining future needs/trends, as well as in setting future goals.
  5. Self-motivation – This refers to your readiness to take the initiative and be a self starter.

Whatever degree you’ve chosen, chances are, you’ve developed some (if not all) of these transferable skills. Having these transferable skills will make you more skilled than you think.

Should you decide to take further studies to boost your resume, do consider the transferable skills you have to complement your chosen area of study. This way, you can open more career doors for yourself.
