Deciding When to Make a Career Change
Do you wake up energized on weekdays, looking forward to work? Or are you struggling to get out of bed just to ‘go through the motions’? If it's the second, then you might need a career change.
Dissatisfaction in our livelihood could negatively affect our outlook in life. This is the reason why finding the right job-fit is important.
A good job-fit is chiefly based on work compatibility. Ideally, your job must match your character, interests, skills, values and standards. The better the fit, the more positive and productive you’ll be with your work.
Here are some indicators of a poor job fit that may be a sign for a career change:
- Your only motivation is to earn money for your obligations
- You don’t see any room for career growth/advancement
- You don’t seem to find a sense of purpose with what you’re doing
- Your job forces you to compromise your values and beliefs
- You can’t wait for the week to end
If you’re experiencing majority of these signs, it may be wise for you to consider making a career change.
Of course, a change of career can be difficult during an economic recession. If you really need to make a career change, don’t do it hastily. Make sure you already have a job prospect to transfer to.
Even if you can’t stand the job, it’s always best for you to leave in good terms. Plan your exit strategy carefully and make sure that your current place of work will also be able to prepare for your exit. This way, you will still be able to build up your network. Besides, you’ll never know if you’ll need a letter of recommendation!
