Careers in Archeology

Careers in archeology are glamorized in pop culture. When we hear “Archeology”, we usually think of popular movie and game franchises like “Indiana Jones”, Tomb Raider” and even the critically acclaimed PlayStation 3 action-adventure title “Uncharted: Drake’s Fortune,” where swashbuckling heroes are on a race to hunt for an ancient relic. Despite a common basic premise, they all provide exciting and fun escapism.

Of course, real archeology is far from the ‘chasing and gun-fighting’ scenarios depicted in movies or in videogames. However, that doesn’t mean that careers in archeology are any less interesting, especially for people who are curious about past civilizations. It’s still an adventure of uncovering and learning from the past - though without the gunfights.

Career choices in archaeology range from occupations in colleges, universities, museums, the federal government, state governments and private companies. Job descriptions vary, since archeologists are assigned to teach, conduct field explorations, analyze artifacts and sites, and publish the results of their findings and research.

The minimum educational requirement to enter the field of archeology is a B.A. or B.S. degree with a major in archeology or anthropology, as well as related work experience. However, progressing in this line of work and landing supervisory positions require a graduate degree (M.A/M.S.) or a Ph.D.
