Job Spotlight: IT Manager

Salary: $83,060

The majority of IT managers appear to have very similar tasks and duties of a normal manager in the corporate world.  It is not until one delves deep into the inner workings of an IT manager’s daily life that we can begin to understand this often misunderstood position.

Keep this in mind: 90% of IT jobs are at non-IT companies.  Often times IT managers have to completely redesign the infrastructure of a company to be compatible with modern technology. Most companies are slow to embrace change, especially changes to the organization or departmentalization of the company.  Therefore, an IT manger needs to be not only tech savvy, but have the necessary people skills to coordinate with the vast array of departments within a company (HR, marketing, finance, etc.).

Meetings, emails, and more meetings.  Most IT managers are managing, not tinkering with technology or computers.  You have to be able to deal with people first and foremost.  In addition to receiving proper IT training, IT managers need to have great people skills.
